I make because I’m making it make sense. That ‘it’ takes many forms in my work including identity, mortality, and productivity, but it can ultimately be understood as existence. Elizabeth Gilbert said, “Maybe the arts are just the most literal definition of taking nothing and making it into something. Maybe in all realms of life, you must somehow figure out how to create the things that are missing from you.” So that’s what I’m doing, creating understandings of existence that are missing from me. My work therefor serves as a form of auto-ethnography: systematically analyzing personal experience in order to understand cultural experience.
