Statement

My work ranges from ceramics as well as oil paintings. In both mediums I push my artistic style in both color and form. Cocina Bonita, is a painting where I explored different color pallets as well as textures. Because this was my first large painting, I was able to really play with the paint to create lines, value and overall, a strong composition. I also wanted to include personal cultural elements into this piece like the conchas on the kitchen table and the sun in the background as well. In my next painting, Dinner for two, is a more experimental piece where I explored color mixing and overlapping elements. This piece followed a different process compared to my first painting where I started with an underpainting, as for this second piece I just started painting and began adding color, I followed a stream of conciousness approach when adding elements to the piece like the skeletal rib cage, the rat on the floor, and the objects on the table. I also included traditional Mexican symbols or elements like the sun and moon, as well as the background patterns that can be found in Mexican pottery. For my ceramic piece, Sweet Tooth, I wanted to bring my characters to life by giving them form in a utilitarian piece. I pinch formed and slab built the vessel as well as the hat. I also hand sculpted teeth to use as charms that go around the piece and a few hanging on the hat. I wanted to combine some of my painterly elements into this medium to fully wrap my whimsical artistic style.
