Artist Statement: The Touch of True North

David is 3 years-old. This textile artwork equips him for his journey ahead. Loving a person involves learning the individual’s passions, character, and preferences. Each of 39 fabrics in this quilt celebrates elements of who David is. With demonstrated wanderlust, this child’s eagerness for adventure emerged from the moment he was mobile.

Linking today’s message to old truths, the quilt top is a modern interpretation of the classic double-wedding-ring design. Softness of the cotton fabrics coupled with the warmth of wool batting create an enveloping respite for David. The mariner’s star on this early 1900s map points to True North. As David grows, understanding True North will be vital to his ability to find his way.

Scarlet, purple and blue are an ancient color palette signifying honor and faithfulness.   Incorporation of translucent fabric paints allows the characteristics of the child to show through while creating an overlay of the world. Throughout his lifetime he can hand stitch lines of his global travels from the gold star button (his home).

I want David to know that wherever he journeys he can always rely on True North. And that I love him.
